Policies and Tuition

The Institute for Dance, Inc.

“A Performing Arts Center”

Our Goal

At The Institute for Dance, our goal is to provide dance education and personal growth opportunities at an affordable price. We take pride in being able to offer our dancers a well- rounded dance education. We also take very seriously the environment and education your dancer receives. Our goal is to provide a challenging, positive, and fun environment that is influential in the lives of our dancers as we teach and build proper dance technique, respect, discipline, and self-esteem. We believe even difficult things can be achieved when the bar is set high and the door of opportunity is left wide open for the dancer to walk through it.

General Information

  • Please know that all classes are subject to enrollment. You will be notified if a class is cancelled.
  • Parents need to supervise young dancers in the lobby areas. All dancers must conduct themselves in a courteous and respectful manner at all times.
  • Lost & Found items are kept in the downstairs dressing room. Items are donated to charity every 4 months. Please make sure that all of your dancer’s dancewear is properly labeled.
  • Dancers should abide by the dress code at all times (tights, leotard, shoes, etc..)
  • Hair is to be secured off the face and neck before class begins.
  • No gum or food in dance studios.
  • A 30 day notice (email or in the office) to drop a class

  • Be on time to pick up your dancer.
  • You will be kept informed through monthly newsletters via email. They will also be available on our Facebook page. Make sure the office has your current email address.
  • DANCE SHOES are to be worn in the studio or on the appropriate dance floors, and not on pavement and concrete. This is to preserve the life of your dancer’s shoes as well as our dance floors.
  • APPROPRIATE ATTIRE to and from the studio is important for every dancer. Dancewear should be covered. We appreciate parental guidance in this matter as you help your dancers understand our rules of covering dancewear to and from our studio.
  • In order for dancers to receive the most from their class and for the teacher to maintain a student’s focus, we ask that viewing class be only on the days which we have set aside as OBSERVATION DAYS. We will have one week in November and one in March for family to come and observe the classroom experience.

Absences & Inclement Weather

Please notify the studio as soon as possible if you are going to miss a class. You can either send us a message through our website, institutefordance.org or call the studio at (757) 229-1717. Please note that attendance is important to the learning process and you are expected to be in your assigned class each week. Excessive absenteeism may result in your inability to participate in upcoming performances and could inhibit your advancement to the next class level.

GOOD ATTENDANCE IS VITAL and class attendance records are taken daily.

In the event of inclement weather, we follow the Williamsburg/JCC District closings. We will also post cancellations on our Facebook page. If you signed up to receive text messages, we will also send a text. We will schedule make-ups if more than 2 classes are missed-refunds will not be given.

Class Placement & Advancement

Placement in the appropriate class is important to each student’s skill development and personal growth. For students younger than seven, placement is based on the student’s age as of the first day of class. For students age seven and older, skill level and experience are also considered. Premature advancement to the next level can have a profound and negative impact both on a student’s self-confidence, and on skill acquisition and development of proper technique. The instructor’s placement decisions are final and are always meant to be in the best interest of the student.

Annual Recital

All dancers have the opportunity to participate in our June recital. Dances are choreographed and rehearsed to prepare for the show, so instructors plan on all dancers participating. If your dancer will not be able to participate in the recital, you must contact the office by December 1st or you will be held responsible for the cost of a costume. Costume fees are $55.00 for student’s intro-level 3A and $65.00 for intermediate-advanced. All fees are due by January 15th. Costumes will not be ordered if you have a balance on your account unless payment arrangements are made in writing.

Please review our recital information packet on our website for more information and helpful tips.

Christmas Dreams

Institute for Dance, Inc. (iDance) has created a unique-to-Williamsburg holiday show, Christmas Dreams.  It is written, choreographed, propped, narrated and performed almost entirely by our local dance studio, with support from the community.

As an alternative to the normal holiday productions, “Christmas Dreams” provides residents and visitors an exciting way to enjoy the season.

Auditions will be in June of 2017 at the studio and  the casting process will begin in June 2017.   We will finalize casting, send out selection letters and set a rehearsal schedule in late August/early September.  Rehearsals, advertising and staging will take place September through early December 2017.

Payment Policy

A $50.00 registration fee for the first student and $25.00 for each additional family member is due at the time of registration. This fee holds your place in the class and is non-refundable. Upon registration, a parent must fill out a registration form, sign liability release forms, and agree with school policies and regulations. There is no registration fee for the summer session.

We have two payment plans available. A 10% discount is offered if a full year’s tuition is paid by the first week of classes or you may pay your tuition over 10 month payments. Monthly students are encouraged to keep a credit/debit card on file to be billed automatically the first week of each month. Students who do not wish to keep a card on file are responsible for making payments on time each month. Payments can be made through our website customer portal, in person or by mail to: The Institute for Dance, Inc. / 3356 Ironbound Rd #501 / Williamsburg, VA 23188.

Tuition is based on a 36-week dance year.  Payments are broken up into 10 monthly payments for your convenience.  Tuition is non-refundable and is paid to save your child’s place in class.  If your child has decided to stop attending class, you must stop by the studio and speak with the office or email annie@institutefordance.org.
